Freedom fighter, anti-apartheid leader, former President of South Africa, and Nobel Peace Prize winner Nelson Mandela walked free from Victor Verster Prison on February 11, 1990.
If you’re interested in learning more about Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela‘s life, you might want to check out this piece from South African History Online. You can watch the full speech he gave upon his release after 27 years in prison here:
The Nelson Mandela Foundation also posts regularly on the anniversary of his release, including an informative post today for the 35th anniversary. This NPR article commemorating the 25th anniversary of Madiba’s release is a good read. It describes the way that “Black South Africa exploded with joy,” on the day of his release. I carry that image of exploding joy with me, as I also carry the lessons on perseverance and the power of unity learned from Nelson Mandela’s lifelong efforts.
